People use the word \u201cGod\u201d in very different ways. Some mean the Creator who knows us and takes an interest in our lives. Others mean an impersonal force, a distant intelligence, or simply whatever gives life meaning. Even among Christians, our ideas about God can differ considerably. Before we can talk sensibly about faith, prayer, or salvation, we need to consider who God is and why we believe what we believe about Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian theology begins with the God revealed in Scripture. The Bible presents Him as the Creator of all things, distinct from His creation but actively involved in it. He knows, loves, speaks, judges, and acts. Christians also believe that God has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ, so understanding His character involves looking closely at the life and teaching of Jesus. Our picture of God needs to account for what Scripture reveals, including the passages that challenge our assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions About God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some questions concern whether God exists and what reasons we have for believing in Him. Others concern His nature: whether He knows the future, how He relates to time, and what Christians mean when they speak of the Trinity. Then there are the questions that become personal when we face disappointment or uncertainty. If God wants us to know Him, why does He sometimes seem hidden? If He is loving, how do we understand His judgment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions deserve careful answers. A familiar phrase may be true and still need explaining, especially to someone who hasn\u2019t grown up hearing it. Saying that God has always existed, for example, raises questions about why everything else needs a cause and He doesn\u2019t. We\u2019ll examine those questions, explain the biblical teaching, and consider the reasoning behind different Christian interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to Know God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Studying God involves more than collecting facts or learning how to win an argument. What we believe about Him shapes whether we trust Him, how we pray, and how we respond when we don\u2019t understand what\u2019s happening. Someone who sees God as eager to punish will approach Him differently from someone who believes He never holds anyone accountable. We need an understanding that takes His love, holiness, mercy, and justice seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t have to resolve every difficult question before you can begin. Start with the question that brought you here, read the relevant passages, and examine the explanation carefully. Some answers will lead to further questions, and that\u2019s part of learning. The purpose of this section is to help you develop a clearer understanding of God and a faith grounded in more than assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
