Some see Him as a teacher whose words about love and forgiveness deserve attention. Others regard Him as a prophet, a reformer, or an example of someone willing to suffer for His convictions. Christians believe He is the Son of God who became human, died for our sins, and rose from the dead. Those claims bring us to the central questions of Christianity: Who is Jesus, what did He accomplish, and how should we respond to Him?

The Gospels describe Jesus teaching crowds, healing the sick, confronting hypocrisy, and welcoming people whom others preferred to avoid. They also show Him experiencing hunger, grief, exhaustion, temptation, and suffering. Understanding Jesus means taking His humanity seriously while examining what Scripture says about His divine identity. We need to consider both, even when explaining how they fit together stretches our understanding.

Questions About Jesus

This section addresses questions about Jesus’ identity, birth, teaching, temptation, death, and resurrection. What does it mean to call Him the Son of God? How can He be both God and human? Why was His death necessary, and why is His resurrection essential to Christian faith? These questions help us understand the message Christians proclaim and the reasons we place our trust in Him.

Some questions arise from passages that are difficult to understand. Jesus prayed to the Father, submitted to His will, and cried out on the cross that God had forsaken Him. We shouldn’t hurry past those passages simply because they complicate an explanation we’re comfortable with. They deserve careful reading alongside the passages that speak of His authority, His relationship with the Father, and His role in our salvation.

Understanding His Message

Jesus taught about the kingdom of God, called people to repentance, and challenged assumptions about righteousness. He addressed outward conduct, but He also dealt with the motives beneath it. Anger, pride, greed, and the desire to impress others received His attention along with more visible wrongdoing. His teaching asks us to examine ourselves, which can be considerably less enjoyable than finding something wrong with everybody else.

Reading His words in context helps us understand that teaching. A parable makes its point differently from a direct command, and an answer to a particular opponent needs to be read with the exchange in mind. We’ll consider those settings as we examine what Jesus said and how it applies to us. The goal is to hear His message clearly enough to recognize when it challenges our habits or expectations.

Following Jesus

Christian faith involves trusting Jesus and responding to His call to follow Him. That includes learning from His teaching, receiving His forgiveness, and allowing His authority to shape our decisions. We don’t have to understand every theological detail before we begin, but we should keep growing in our understanding of the One we claim to follow. Familiarity with His name isn’t the same as knowing what He taught.

Begin with the question that interests you, and read the relevant Gospel accounts and other passages for yourself. Our Bible study resources can help you compare translations and examine different explanations. As you work through these subjects, consider both what Scripture reveals about Jesus and what that means for your own life. His question to the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” still gives us plenty to think about.

People admire Jesus for many different reasons.
