We can explain forgiveness while holding a grudge, believe in generosity while avoiding opportunities to give, and recognize pride more easily in someone else than in ourselves. Christian living brings what we believe into contact with how we actually behave. That’s where we discover which lessons we’ve learned and which ones still need some work.

Following Jesus affects our relationships, habits, priorities, and decisions. It involves the things we do at church, but it also reaches into our homes, workplaces, finances, and conversations. Much of that growth happens in ordinary circumstances. Keeping a promise, admitting a mistake, listening patiently, and treating someone fairly may not attract attention, but they give us opportunities to put our faith into practice.

Questions About Everyday Faith

This section addresses questions about spiritual growth, doubt, temptation, forgiveness, relationships, and responsible decision-making. How do we overcome a habit we keep returning to? What does forgiveness require when trust has been broken? How should we make a decision when Scripture doesn’t give a specific instruction? These questions call for careful attention to biblical teaching and the circumstances in which we’re trying to apply it.

Some subjects also require us to distinguish between a clear command, a matter of wisdom, and a personal conviction. Christians can agree that they should honor God while reaching different conclusions about a particular activity or choice. We need to understand the reasons behind those conclusions before deciding that everyone must follow our example. Our preferences deserve examination just as much as anyone else’s.

Growth Takes Practice

Christian maturity develops as we learn to respond faithfully to God. Reading Scripture, praying, participating in a healthy church, and accepting correction all contribute to that process. So does acting on what we already understand. We may want greater insight when the immediate need is to apologize to someone or stop making excuses for conduct we know is wrong.

Struggling doesn’t mean growth is impossible, and a setback doesn’t erase every step we’ve taken. We do need to be honest about patterns that continue to harm us or other people. That may involve changing routines, accepting accountability, or seeking help from someone equipped to address the problem. Depending on God can go along with taking practical steps and receiving appropriate professional care.

Relationships and Responsibility

Many of the hardest questions about Christian living involve other people. Forgiveness, reconciliation, trust, and boundaries are related, but they aren’t interchangeable. Forgiving someone doesn’t automatically make that person trustworthy or restore a damaged relationship to what it was before. We’ll examine those distinctions carefully, especially where mistreatment, manipulation, or abuse is involved.

We’ll also consider responsibilities involving money, possessions, marriage, and family life. These subjects often bring strong opinions and complicated circumstances. Applying Scripture well requires us to understand its teaching and listen carefully enough to recognize what a person is facing. A familiar answer may need more explanation, and sometimes the situation calls for patient counsel rather than a quick verdict.

Begin with the question that concerns you, and consider how the relevant passages apply to your circumstances. The purpose of this section is to help you develop judgment, character, and habits that reflect your faith. We’ll keep learning along the way, but we don’t have to wait until we understand everything before practicing what we already know. The next opportunity may be as close as the person we’re about to speak to.

It’s possible to know what the Bible says about patience and still lose yours before breakfast.
