You don’t have to be a pastor or attend seminary to ask serious questions about God. If you’ve wondered why Jesus had to die, how prayer works, or why Christians disagree about salvation, you’re already thinking about theology. The word may sound academic, but the questions are often personal. What we believe about God affects how we live, how we treat people, and what we do when life takes a turn we didn’t expect.

Theology is the study of God, what He has revealed about Himself, and our relationship with Him. It includes understanding Scripture, but it also means bringing its teachings together. A passage about faith belongs alongside what the Bible says about grace, repentance, and obedience. Studying those connections helps us develop beliefs that account for the whole of Scripture rather than a handful of familiar verses.

Explore the Questions

This section brings together articles about God, the Bible, Jesus, salvation, prayer, the Holy Spirit, Christian living, the church, suffering, and what lies beyond this life. Some explain foundational Christian beliefs. Others address questions that have kept believers talking, studying, and occasionally arguing for centuries. You can begin with the subject that interests you and follow the related questions as your understanding grows.

We’ll explain theological terms in ordinary language and examine the biblical reasons behind different positions. Christians sometimes disagree because they understand a passage differently or give different weight to particular texts. Understanding how someone reached a conclusion helps us evaluate it fairly. We can take a position without pretending that everyone who disagrees with us has never opened a Bible.

Study for Yourself

The articles here are intended to help you understand Scripture and examine what you believe. Read the passages being discussed, consider their context, and ask whether an explanation fits what the text actually says. Our Bible Reader, Parallel Bible, and commentaries can help you compare translations and consider how others have understood a passage. Those resources are useful companions to study, but you still need to read the Bible for yourself.

You don’t need to settle every theological question before you can grow in your faith. Start with the foundations, work through the questions you have, and be willing to reconsider an assumption when Scripture challenges it. The purpose is to know God more clearly and let that understanding shape your life. That’s what we mean at Jew & Greek when we say, “Know what you believe. Understand why you believe it. Live like it matters.”
